NON-DUALITY

I tend to use the term non-duality on this site because it’s fairly neutral. Words like ‘enlightenment’, ‘liberation’, and ‘Self-realisation’ often carry a strong emotive weight or sound like a personal claim. If you want to know more about my own relationship to the question of enlightenment, then I’ve tried to give a bit of an overview on the About Me page.

When it comes to my work with others, non-duality or non-separation is my ground of understanding, but I try to work on a level and in a way that fits each individual. Most people don’t come wanting spiritual enquiry alone — there are usually life-related issues such as relationships, work, health etc. that feel like they need attention.

Even when spiritual seeking is the main motivation, there isn’t always a clear sense of direction, but often just a longing for something more, without knowing where to focus the longing or how to apply it. If this describes you, my intention is to help you uncover the truth that your innermost being already knows.

The teachings of Ramana Maharshi and Nisargadatta Maharaj have been at the centre of my own practice. If you’re already familiar with them and are drawn to Self-enquiry, we can look together at your current relationship with these direct teachings on the nature of Self. Such teachings are intended to point beyond the mind, rather than to create new, more spiritual, concepts. Yet the mind inevitably takes hold of them. Rather than seeing this as a problem, we can bring gentle awareness to the mind’s need to understand, allowing the teachings to land more deeply.

We can also explore meditation and other spiritual practices, if this is something that speaks to you. If non-duality is already your orientation, we can look at the mind’s dilemma around effort in practice: how can making effort bring us closer to our natural, effortless state?
